Art

General Subject Information

The BTEC Art course that we offer provides pupils with the opportunity to learn how to produce work as if working within the design industry.  Pupils are encouraged to produce a series of experimental work in response to a set brief and specified client. Pupils are encouraged to develop individual and independent responses whilst working within the constraints of the brief.

The course is set over two years and covers four projects in total. Pupils will complete three coursework projects; The Powell Cotton Museum (Introduction to Specialist Pathways), Mexican Day of The Dead (Communicating Ideas in 3D) and St Peter`s Place (Communicating Ideas in 2D).  In the January of the second year, pupils will be set their Exam project, this will be externally set and the chosen theme changes every year.

The three coursework projects cover a broad range of 2D and 3D Materials, Techniques and Processes, allowing pupils to produce a strong portfolio of experimental work. Pupils are introduced to a diverse range of 2D and 3D artists and also encouraged to independently research further artists that inspire their ideas.

Pupils that choose Art are encouraged to be able to develop their own ideas that have been inspired by an introduction to artists, individual tutorials and in class workshops and demonstrations.

Level 2 Subject Information

BTEC Level 1/2 Art

Here at St George’s we offer BTEC Art, a course that provides pupils with the opportunity to experiment with a diverse variety of materials, in response to a range of projects.

The course offered relates to the Art and Design process used within the design industry and therefore prepares pupils for higher levels of study and work beyond the classroom. The Art and Design BTEC that we offer introduces students to four very different design briefs over the course of two years. Themes that are included are; The Powell Cotton Museum, St Peter's Place and Mexican Day of The Dead. In the January of the second year students are provided with an externally set exam project. Pupils feel well prepared for this exam as it follows a similar process to the other three projects set. The exam project culminates in a ten hour Art exam where students will create their final outcome, within the Art department. St George's Art department have been commended on their choice of design brief by external moderators as they offer students the breadth and depth of study that enables pupils to achieve their full potential within this field.

If the pupil is creative, imaginative and interested in careers within the creative industry then this could be the right choice for them! If students have any questions please encourage them to seek answers from our team in the Art department.  Miss Deed, Lead Learner
