BTEC Level 1/2
Here at St George’s we offer BTEC Textiles, a course that provides pupils with the opportunity to explore a range of textile materials and techniques in an individual and expressive way. Outcomes could be Fashion, Interiors or Art based responses.
The BTEC qualification provides students with set briefs and themes that focus them upon developing skills across a variety of areas such as 2D Textile techniques and 3D Textile techniques. Students learn a wide variety of textile techniques and then choose their preferred methods when creating individual responses to themes. The textile teacher will encourage and guide students to experiment with their individual ideas, in turn encouraging the student to create individual, forward thinking and exciting outcomes. The range of projects encourage students to develop ideas that could be used for fashion, interiors or Art specialisms.
If pupils are creative, enthusiastic and interested in working within the creative industries (Art, Textiles or Fashion), then this could be the option for them. If students have any questions about our BTEC Textiles course then please encourage them to ask our team within the Art department.

HOW COURSE IS ASSESSED
Three coursework projects are internally assessed by the pupils Textiles Teacher and then moderated by our BTEC Lead Internal Verifier.
The exam project is externally set, internally marked and externally moderated.
Pupils could go on to higher level courses in a variety of Art and Design related subjects, at College or sixth form. Pupils could also go on to apprenticeships within the creative industry.

Unit 1-Introduction to Specialist Pathways – ‘The Circus’
Pupils will be introduced to using a range of specialist materials including; fabrics, textiles, dyes, inks, digital, making, constructing, weaving, cutting, dyeing, printing, designing, styling, illustration.
In response to the brief, pupils produce a series of drawings and samples that experiment with a range of textile techniques. These will culminate with a final outcome that is appropriate to the brief.
Unit 2-Creative Project-Exam-Externally set
Unit 3-Communicating Ideas in 2D – ‘A Journey’
In this unit pupils will base a series of work upon the theme ‘A Journey’. Pupils will experiment with how to use visual language to communicate a specific idea. Techniques will include; print-work, dying fabric, embellished materials, machine embroidery, Collage and Hand embroidery amongst many more. Pupils will be introduced to a variety of designers that will help inspire pupil`s outcomes.
Unit 4-Communicating Ideas in 3D – ‘The Coast’
For this unit, pupils will be encouraged to experiment with a variety of 3-Dimensional Textile techniques, using the theme Coast and 3-Dimensional artists and designers as their inspiration.
Amongst other techniques pupils will experiment with natural and manmade fibres, weaving, construction and fabric manipulation.
The final piece will be a 3-Dimensional outcome.
