We would like to welcome you all to Year 1!

In Year 1, we will be preparing your children for their Phonics Screening which will take place in the summer term. The children will continue to learn the 42 phonemes, through the Jolly Phonics Programme, mastering the art of blending and segmenting both real and ‘alien’ words.

Home Learning

Children are given homework on Friday every week, which should be returned to school the following Thursday. The activities support and consolidate the teaching that has taken place that week, giving you an opportunity to see what you child has been learning in class!

Reading

Children should continue to read their levelled reading books every evening. Please support your child with recording this in their Reading Record. We will continue to select their books, and aim to provide a balance between challenge, and reading for fluency and understanding. All children will also read individually with the Class Teacher, and read in a group (Guided Reading) with a teaching assistant each week. In class, we will also have a short daily reading session and a dedicated lesson once a week where we will focus on grammar and reading skills, including comprehension, the use of vocabulary and story themes.

Maths at home

It is important this year that all children continue to develop their understanding of number, and the relationship between mathematical concepts and real-life use. You can support children by hearing them count forwards and backwards within 100, as well as counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

A good website to help the children practise their number facts is: http://www.topmarks.co.uk/

Children can also access mathematical related activities on Purple Mash.

PE

Year 1 will have PE on a Monday and a Tuesday afternoon. Please ensure your child has the appropriate PE kit in school on this day. Please also ensure that all your child’s PE kit is clearly named and that plimsoles still fit at the end of each term – we know how much they grow!

Please look out for the curriculum newsletters, which will give a more detailed overview of the learning taking place that term. These will be emailed out to you at the start of each new term.

Thank you for your support. Please feel free to come and speak to a member of the Year 1 Team if you have any queries.

To report an absence due to illness or other unforeseen circumstances, please contact the school office on each day of the absence.  Alternatively, you can email primaryadmin@st-georgescofe-thanet.kent.sch.uk each day.  Please include details of your child's name, class and the reason for absence in your message.
