History.

What will I need to study this subject?

Four C grades or above with a C in History and a C in English.  You need an enthusiasm for all aspects of History, enjoy reading and be keen to study.

What will I learn?

History is taught in small groups.  The course will involve a variety of activities including:

Year 1 AS Level History

Unit 1 – European History.  Tsarist and revolutionary Russia

Unit 2 – British History, Henry VII and the establishment of a secure monarchy 1483 – 1515

Unit 3a – European History Revolutionary Russia 1917 – 1929

Unit 3b – British History Aspects of Tudor England c1483 – 1529

Year 2 A Level

Unit 4 – European History Russia and the USSR 1900 to the present day

Unit 5 – British History Reformation Reaction and the age of Elizabeth c1525 – 1603

Unit 6 – European History The Holocaust

How will my work be assessed?

Assessment is by examination and coursework essays.  The examination is a combination of structured source questions and essay style questions.

At the end of your first year and second year you will sit two examinations and during your first year you will write a 1000 course essay.  In the second year you will write a 2500 word essay.

 

What can I do alongside this subject?

History can be taken with most other subjects and is good for keeping your options open.  It is a very flexible subject which develops written skills and research in particular.

Where next?

History is useful as the skills you use can be used in many different jobs.  History studies people and what motivates them to do certain things.  History shows that you can read and gather lots of information, analyse it and come to a consultation or explanation.  History develops skills of communication and is good to have in lots of careers such as conservation work, town planning, law the police, teaching, journalism, accountancy, research, costume and product design and countless others.
