Music

These courses are aimed at students who will have already studied Music to GCSE Level.  There are intended as units in which all the core elements of performance, composition and analytical listening will be extended and developed.  Students attempting this course MUST BE proficient on an instrument or have exceptional vocal skills.

What will I Learn?

AS Unit

Candidates will perform 1 or 2 solo pieces.  The music selected will be at a higher level than previously encountered (grade 6 – 8) the students will learn to play with accuracy of rhythm, intonation and most importantly expression and interpretation.

Students will be expected to perform at least 4 times in a year with an audience, if possible.  (1 piece must be the candidates own composition).

Candidates will be expected to develop and refine their own compositions using an advanced musical understanding.  This will be in the form of a composition portfolio which will include techniques exercises.  (Bach chorales, minimalism etc).  Candidates will be taught how to make use of music technology in this area.

Candidates will be taught how to listen to music analytically.  To be able to assess and determine differing genres of music, musical techniques, devices and harmonic progressions.

A2 Unit

Candidates continuing with the second part of the course will build on their knowledge of musical understanding.  The candidate will be able to choose a pathway that best suits their specific strengths.

Students will continue to develop and refine their own compositions.  They will be expected to perform music to a level that demonstrates a high understanding of communicative skills, technique and interpretation.

They will analyse set works by established composers.

How Will the Work be Assessed?

All the work will be extremely moderated excepting the portfolio of performances.

Further Education
