Applied Science (Single or Double Award) Applied Science enables you to develop a broad understanding of scientific principles as well as allowing you to focus on specific scientific pathways. What will I need to study this subject? You will need at least a B in Single Science or CC in Dual or Applied GCSE Science. As the course requires some calculations you will find it easier if you have a grade C or above in GCSE Mathematics. What will I learn?
Single Award For AS you will study 3 modules: 1 – Science at work 2 – Managing human activity 3 – Finding out about substances Units 1 and 3 are portfolios and unit 2 is examined. For A2: 1 – Planning and carrying out a scientific investigation 2 – 2 optional units e.g. medical physics, ecology, sports science Double Award In addition to those units studied for single award you will need to complete extra units. For AS double award: 1 – Food science and technology 2 – Choosing and using materials 3 – Synthesising organic and biochemical compounds For A2 double award: 1 – As single award 2 – 5 optional units including the healthy body, action and development of medicines, physics of performance effects. The units are a mixture of portfolios and examinations.
What can I do alongside this subject? As applied science is a varied subject covering all three main sciences so it can be studied with biology, sports science, physics and chemistry. Where next? Applied science gives you a broad background in science and can be used to go on to further education or employment as many employers will take on students with scientific background. |
