Applied Science

(Single or Double Award)

Applied Science enables you to develop a broad understanding of scientific principles as well as allowing you to focus on specific scientific pathways.

What will I need to study this subject?

You will need at least a B in Single Science or CC in Dual or Applied GCSE Science.  As the course requires some calculations you will find it easier if you have a grade C or above in GCSE Mathematics.

What will I learn?

Single Award

For AS you will study 3 modules:

            1 – Science at work

            2 – Managing human activity

3 – Finding out about substances

Units 1 and 3 are portfolios and unit 2 is examined.

For A2:

1 – Planning and carrying out a scientific investigation

2 – 2 optional units e.g. medical physics, ecology, sports science

Double Award

In addition to those units studied for single award you will need to complete extra units.

For AS double award:

1 – Food science and technology

2 – Choosing and using materials

3 – Synthesising organic and biochemical compounds

For A2 double award:

             1 – As single award

2 – 5 optional units including the healthy body, action and development of medicines, physics of performance effects.

The units are a mixture of portfolios and examinations.

What can I do alongside this subject?

As applied science is a varied subject covering all three main sciences so it can be studied with biology, sports science, physics and chemistry.

Where next?

Applied science gives you a broad background in science and can be used to go on to further education or employment as many employers will take on students with scientific background.
