GCE in Travel and Tourism

What Will I Need to Study this Subject?

You would benefit most from a GCE in Travel and Tourism if you have one or more of the following:

  • a profile of GCSEs at grade A* - C which could include GCSE Leisure and Tourism (Double Award)
  • other level 2 qualifications such as GNVQ Intermediate, Leisure and Tourism or Edexcel Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Travel and Tourism.

You should also have an interest in the diverse and dynamic travel and tourism industry.

Who is the Course Suitable for?

You will enjoy the course if you would like to develop:

  • an appreciate for the diversity and complexity of the travel and tourism industry
  • practical and technical skills relevant to the travel and tourism industry
  • an understanding of the issues that are affecting the travel and tourism industry

Course Structure

You can study for:

  • A Single Award AS GCE (3 units)
  • A Single Award Advanced GCE (6 Units)

What Will I Learn?

In the AS Units you will learn about:

  • Unit 1 – The Travel and Tourism industry
  • Unit 2 – The Travel and Tourism Customer

In the A2 units you will learn about:

  • Unit 7 – Responsible Tourism
  • Unit 8 – Current Issues in Travel and Tourism

How will I be Assessed?

You will have a written exam in the form of a question and answer booklet for Units 1 and 7.  Each exam will last one and a half hour.

For all other units you will be assessed by coursework.  For some of the units, you will be able to choose the type of organisation or sector of the industry you want to study in more depth.

Where Next?

The GCE in Travel and Tourism qualifies for UCAS points so if you complete it successfully you could move on to study for a degree or BTEC Higher National Certificate or Diploma in a related subject.  You could progress to Modern Apprenticeships in Travel Services or to relevant employment.
