Art

These courses aim to extend and develop the artistic sensibilities of the individual.  They take the form of a one or two year course.

What will I need to study this subject?

The requirement of this course is generally a C grade at GCSE or a portfolio of work showing a genuine commitment to the subject.

What will I learn?

AS

At AS level candidates produce 2 units of work plus an externally set assignment of 8 hours work.  Units of work will mainly take the form of development of the practical processes which were studied at GCSE level.  The stimulus for these units will take a variety of forms including gallery visits, environmental experiences and classroom based enquiries.  Candidates will be encouraged to use a range of media exploring a variety of solutions and ideas.  Much of the work will take place in work journals and may be set by the teacher or may be developed independently by the candidate.

Unit 3 is the externally set assignment and will represent the culmination of the AS course.  Students may then wish to proceed to A2 and a further 3 units.

A2

At this stage candidates are encouraged to take a greater role in the planning and selection of their units of work.

In Unit 4 candidates will select a subject they are interested in.  They will research and evaluate the subject analysing links between their own understanding and that of historical and contemporary references.  The choice can be diverse and is only limited by the fact that there must be a strong connection with their own work as an artist.

Unit 5 focuses more on the problem solving aspects of the subject, with candidates researching, analysing and problem solving whilst developing their own personal style.

The final unit for A2 is again an externally set assignment where pupils have 6 weeks to prepare for and then produce 12 hours of unaided work.  It provides the student with the opportunity to communicate their own ideas, thoughts and feelings and will reflect the development of their work during the 2 year course.

How will my work be assessed?

AS

Unit 1 and Unit 2 are internally set and marked.  Unit 3 is externally set and internally marked.  All units are externally moderated.

A2

Unit’s 4 & 5 are internally set and marked.  Unit 6 is externally set and internally marked.  All units are externally moderated.

What can I do alongside this subject?

Art can be combined with many other subjects being both a practical and academic subject.

Where next?

Art can be continued at degree level on its own as Fine Art but is more usually pursued at Art College on one of the design orientated courses, e.g. Graphic Design, Interior Design, Product Design, Fashion or Architecture following a BTEC Foundation course.

Candidates may also use a pass at A2 to gain entry to other further education courses requiring this level of commitment.
