Art Textiles This is a one or two year course leading to an AS or an A Level. The course will integrate many mixed media skills that are art and craft based, with an emphasis on individual development. Do I need to have taken Art and Textiles as two GCSE Subjects? It will certainly be an advantage to have followed both of these subjects through to Year 11 and you will usually need to need to have achieved a C grade or submit a folio of work. However, if you have only taken one to GCSE level then you would also be able to do this subject. What is this subject? Textile design involves the manipulation of materials, weaving, machine and hand embroidery, appliqué, batik, silk painting, tie dye, mono-print, transfer relief, silk screen, 3D structures and many other disciplines. Also work journals and sketchbooks will be constantly used for drawing, recording images in wet and dry media and making notes.
How is the course structured?
Stimulus and resources for these units will include visits to art and textiles exhibitions, exploring environment, landscapes and the human form with personal research and class studies. Each unit has a broad starting point to allow for the student to develop a personal response and ideas. The basis of all coursework must be shown in the student keeping a work journal and sketchbooks and an artwork folder. These will be submitted in the assessment of each student’s work.
Does this combine well with other subjects? Art Textiles is an academic as well as a practical subject. It can be taken alongside Art and many other subjects. If you choose to take Art Textiles and Art, you will realise how much the skills reinforce each other and you also gain two separate AS and A2 levels.
Where can I go from here? A degree could be pursued in this subject or a design focused course at Art College, e.g. Fashion/Textiles, Interior Design, Graphic or Product Design or Architecture. This would follow a BTEC Foundation Course of one year. A pass at A2 can be used to gain entry to other further education courses. |
