Product Design

What will I need to study this subject?

You will need a minimum grade C in GCSE Resistant Materials, Graphic Products or Product Design before you will be considered for the course.

What will I learn?

You will have the opportunity to study and realise prototype solutions to designing and making opportunities closely linked to the real world of product design and manufacture.  There are three key areas of study:

  • Design and Market Influence
  • Materials and Components
  • Processes and Manufacture

AS       You will produce a Design and Make coursework folder of 50 hours.  This may be approached through either one project to cover the five objectives, or approaching each five objectives as an individual project.  You will take two written examinations, one based on designing a further on the remaining key areas of study.  50% of your AS grade will go towards your A2 grade.

A2       You will produce a further Design and Make coursework folder of 50 hours developing a previous theme further.  A written case study of 25 hours will also be produced.  You will sit one examination lasting 3 hours, again based on the three key area of study.

How will my work be assessed?

AS

You will be assessed in 3 units:

Unit 1      Materials and components - written examination 30% (15% of A Level)

Unit 2      Design and Make - coursework 40% (20% of A Level)

Unit 3      Design - Examination 30% (15% of A Level)

   
A2

Unit 4      Product case study Design and Make - coursework (15%)

Unit 5      Design and Make - coursework (15%)

Unit 6      Written examination key areas of study (20%)

 

What can I do alongside this subject?

Design and Technology can be combined with Art, Physics, Mathematics, Business Studies and Leisure and Tourism.

What next?

With a qualification in this subject you could go on to higher/further education in Art and Design, illustration, interior, furniture, car, jewellery or product design.  Work within design, manufacturing or engineering industries.
