Drama and Theatre Studies

This is a course, which demands practical, creative and communication skills in almost equal measure.  You need to be curious about issues and ideas and have a creative instinct for communicating your views through Drama.

What will I need to study this subject?

4 C grade GCSE’s, preferably with Drama and English Language as two of those.  You will need to be able to study a variety of texts, make relevant notes on practical work and use those notes to structure essays under examination conditions.  You will also need to be able to devise and perform original work from a variety of stimuli.

What will I learn?

AS          You will undertake detailed practical study of at least two plays.  You will perform a role in a production of a play and learn something about the conditions under which the play was originally written and performed.

A2           You will work in a group to devise an original piece of Drama.  You will select scenes from one further play to interpret in a workshop performance.  You will also visit the theatre to evaluate the ways in which directors and performers have interpreted their chosen play.

How will my work be assessed?

AS          You will be assessed at the end of each of the three units.  This includes notes marked by your class teacher – 15%, a practical test of your contribution to the performance – 20% and in a formal written examination – 15%.

A2           You will be assessed at the end of each of the three units.  This includes a Structured Record of notes made whilst devising work and on your performance – 20%, a practical test on your study of text by an external examiner – 15% and in a formal written examination – 15%.

What can I study alongside this subject?

Drama and Theatre Studies can be combined with other Arts subjects e.g. Art and English.  It is also relevant to studying courses which involve communication and case studies.

Where next?

This AS/A Level can lead to further study in Drama, Theatre Studies and Performing Arts in Higher Education.  It can be used as part of your course to broaden your studies.  It complements a range of subjects and is useful in building confidence and improving presentation skills in a range of careers.
