Geography

This course studies the major components of physical, human and environmental Geography.

What will I need?

You will need a grade “C” or above in GCSE Geography with preferably a “C” grade at Mathematics and English Language.

What will I learn?

AS        This will involve three modules covering physical, human and fieldwork studies.  The Physical and Human Geography modules include a final module test.  The fieldwork studies lead to an extended enquiry of the candidates choice, which is marked as a piece of coursework.

A2          This involves the study of three new modules including a synoptic module which assesses candidates’ abilities at drawing together knowledge and skills in the other units.

The topics covered in the Physical Geography modules include plate tectonics, physical and chemical weathering, coastlines, rivers, hydrology, atmosphere circulation, climate and weather patterns, ecosystems and glaciation.

In the human geography modules topics include population, migration, settlement, urbanisation, agriculture, economic systems and development.

How will my work be assessed?

AS & A2         5 modules are assessed by a written exam and 1 by a fieldwork enquiry which all contribute to the final A/S or A2 grade.

What can I do alongside this subject?

Geography can be combined with other Humanities or Sciences, but this will depend on your individual career path.

Where next?

Many recent candidates have gone on to further education, local Government and leisure work.  Geography has a link with most occupations.  It is a useful subject to study for University entrance to follow a wide range of disciplines.
