Christian Worship is at the Heart of all we stand for
Colossians 3 verse 13 – Bear with each other and forgive each other.
Our Five Christian Values of Friendship, Hope, Wisdom, Compassion and Forgiveness underpin all that we do at St George’s Church of England Foundation School. Throughout the curriculum and through worship students encounter and consider these values and the impact on their learning and lives.
Daily worship is provided at St George’s Church of England Foundation school for all students across all years from Reception to Sixth Form. This takes place either in year groups as collective worship or in tutor spaces with a daily act of worship and reflection taking place. Furthermore, there is opportunity each term for students to take part in a Communion service. Additional times of worship take place at key times in the year, such as Harvest, St George’s Day and Easter, with students actively involved.
‘Collective worship in Foundation Schools with a religious character and voluntary schools will be in accordance with the school's trust deed. Where provision is not made by a trust deed, the worship should be in accordance with the beliefs of the religion or denomination specified for the school.’ DfE– A guide to the law for school governors: Religious Foundation and voluntary schools.
Collective Worship is usually taken by members of staff or members of the local Clergy from various churches. Through our ‘Clergy Adoption Scheme’ students are able to get to know their link member of the Clergy. A number of the clergy deliver regular acts of worship in the gym, sports hall and drama studio (Sixth Form in the drama studio) to the groups who have ‘adopted’ them. The current pairings are as follows:
|Year 7||Revd. Doctor Denise Yeldham|
|Year 8||Revd. Rhodri Walters|
|Year 9||Revd. Stuart Gay|
|Year 10||Revd. Philip Musindi|
|Year 11||Revd. Stephen Skinner|
|Sixth Form||Revd. Doctor Stephen Cave|
Father Adams also leads worship in the primary school each week and other local clergy are involved there as well.
At lunchtime, a member of the clergy is available in The Heart, or one of the other lunchtime venues, on a rota throughout the term. Prayer is available for students, staff or families through the clergy or Christian Ethos Co-ordinator.
‘EXPLORE GROUP’ for students
In addition to the religious education provided by St George’s Church of England Foundation School there is a chance for students to ‘explore’ further their own Christian faith. This group is part of our regular extra-curricular programme, from 2.30 pm - 3.30 pm on Mondays – meet in the Heart.
Revd. Samuel Hearle and Ella Floyd, (from Queens Road Baptist Church, Broadstairs) kindly plan fun activities and we study passages from the Bible. Whenever possible we meet in the small gym. The Explore Group also supports and raises awareness of ‘Global Challenge’, a charity supported by the school in recent years, as well as continuing their support of toilet twinning and other worthy charities.
You can see further information about both of these charities on their websites.
