We take particular care to help new students to settle quickly into the larger community of a secondary school and there is a close liaison with primary schools. In the Summer Term we begin the process of Primary Transfer with a series of visits to our major feeder schools to talk to class teachers about each student coming in September in order to build up a full picture of their needs and strengths in the immediate months of arrival.
We offer an extensive outreach program to our local feeder schools. In terms 2-6 we visit local schools and our PE department run fun sports activities. For these sessions year 10 and 11 students that are taking part in Young Sports Leaders act as helpers/ coaches.
We also offer subject specific transition events over the summer term. Parents and students are invited to the school and while the students take part in fun activities in the subject area the parents are given the opportunity to find out about the subject area and ask any questions to the teachers .
In the summer term members of our year team visit the local feeder schools and talk to the year 6 students who are joining St George’s in September. The students are given information booklets and are given the opportunity to ask any questions they have about life at St George’s school.
We offer two transition days for the students who are coming to St George’s. On these days students take part in a series of activities and challenges which gives them the perfect opportunity to develop friendships with other students but also get used to the school layout. Early in the Winter term, we hold our year 7 parents’ evening to update parents on early progress and this offers an opportunity for teachers, students and parents to raise any concerns or queries.
