Faculty: Business & EnterpriseSubject: Health & Social Care Health and Social Care is a work based course which can be studied in Years 10, 11 and the sixth Form. It covers all aspects of the work area and has helped many of our students become nurses, midwives, social workers, youth workers, obtain early years degrees and work with children. In Years 10 and 11 the BTEC Diploma is studied. This is entirely coursework based and means that all work done counts towards the final grade. The course covers many aspects of Health and Care work across all ages. Students study the Acts of Parliament that have to be followed to keep carers and clients safe; how people communicate with each other; that Care Value Base that supports care work and the Human body and how it functions, the impact on Diet and Health and Creative + Therapeutic Activities.

This covers all the basic areas of Health and Care work, and students have to produce two portfolios and sit an external exam. For the advanced level we do Applied GCE. This can be studied as a single or double award (1 or 2 ‘A’ levels). The single Award consists of 4 portfolios and 2 exams over 2 years. The Double Award consists of 8 portfolios and 4 exams over 2 years On all courses students are actively encouraged to visit early year's providers and residential homes to gain knowledge on the application of the classroom work. There are visiting speakers who talk about specific aspects of their work to enhance the students learning. Health and Social Care is useful for those wishing to work in health care, e.g. nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, social work or care work with children and those with special needs. |
