Faculty: CAPASubject: Art Art is compulsory subject through Key Stage 3 and is taught by teachers who specialise in Fine Art, Print Making, Textiles, 3D Studies and Graphics. Classes are taught in mixed ability groups of 25 or less at this level, with 2 lessons a week. Although there is an element of contextual studies involved in the curriculum at this Key Stage, Art is taught very much as a practical subject with an emphasis on allowing pupils to express themselves creatively. A broad curriculum is covered at Key Stage 3 giving students ample opportunity to experiment with a wide range of media and subject matter. This also allows them to make appropriate choices at the next Key Stage. Art and Art Textiles are popular GCSE option subjects at Key Stage 4 with many students taking the opportunity to study the subjects further. Students have 3 lessons a week for this GCSE subject. BTEC Art has recently been introduced to broaden the range of experience available at this Key Stage. This course offers more of an emphasis on practical problem solving and students have 6 lessons a week.
A trip to Paris for year 10 is organised each year to broaden the outlook of students in both the viewing of Art and Architecture. This also helps broaden their experience of travel and a different culture.
In year 10 a Textiles trip is also organised to the Knit and Stitch Show at Alexandra Palace to provide inspiration and the opportunity to gather resources. Art and Art Textiles are popular choices at AS and A2. At this level students are encouraged to work more independently and start to make more personal decisions about the ways in which they wish to develop their work. Workshops and gallery trips are an important aspect of the AS and A level courses and regular trips to both local and London galleries are maintained.
