Faculty: CAPASubject: Drama Drama is a compulsory subject at Key Stage 3, with students receiving one lesson a week. Lesson content is mainly focused on practical skills, as well as group work and social interaction. Students learn a range of simple drama strategies and are taught how to devise and perform their own work. Drama is used to tackle a range of topics appropriate to each year group including an introduction to drama in year 7, bullying and script work in year 8 and issues relating to teenage homelessness in year 9. At GCSE Drama is an optional subject, with students receiving three lessons a week. This is a very popular and successful option which culminates in a performance examination in year 11. Theatre visits are seen as an important part of the course content, and we therefore aim to undertake visits in year 10 and year 11, which may also involve participation in drama workshops with other professional drama practitioners. Students devise and perform their own work in both years 10 and 11. In recent years our students have visited local primary schools to give performances relating to the primary curriculum, as well as putting on evening performances for parents. The A-level Drama and Theatre Studies is an option for students wishing to further their knowledge of drama. This A-level gives them the opportunity to learn about other theatre practitioners, to experiment with new drama styles and to explore new texts in performance. Students perform for an external examiner in both year 12 and year 13, and devise an original piece of work for performance to an audience of their choice. Our students have achieved excellent results at A-level, and some have chosen to continue their studies at university. The drama department collaborates with the music department every year on the school production. This is an opportunity for students of all year groups to work together for a performance. Recent shows have included Bugsy Malone, Grease, Fame and Oliver, with some students having participated every year since joining the school. Auditions for the production are always well attended, and competition for places in the show is increasing. Students are also given the chance to work in other areas of the production including stage crew, lighting and set design. There is a popular after-school drama club for KS3 students every week. This gives students further opportunities to develop their skills, and take part in extra performances for the school carol service and the St. George’s day service
