Drama Course Details

KEY STAGE 3

YEAR 7

During this year, the students learn some basic drama strategies, take on roles in structured narrative pieces of drama and develop their confidence in performance in class.

Topics covered are;

An introduction to drama – use of space, mime and movement.

Greek theatre and Greek myths.

Waxworks – ghostly events in a waxworks museum.

Each topic lasts for two terms, with a practical assessment and a written assessment at the end of term 2, 4 and 6.

YEAR 8

During this year, the students continue to develop their knowledge of drama strategies and performance skills as well as beginning to use drama as a vehicle for exploring moral and social issues.

Topics covered are;

 ‘Sam’ – creating documentary style drama based on the life of a fictional teenager who is peer pressured into sniffing solvents.

Comedy.

Script work.

Each topic lasts for two terms, with a practical assessment and a written assessment at the end of term 2, 4 and 6.

YEAR 9

During this year, the students look at the media and how this influences acting styles as well as studying key speeches from some well known Shakespearean plays including whichever play is being studied for the KS3 English SAT.

Topics covered are;

Media – soap operas, TV advertising and news presentations.

Shakespeare and his theatre.

‘Nicky’ – an exploration of teenage homelessness.

Each topic lasts for two terms, with a practical assessment and a written assessment ant the end of term 2, 4 and 6.

KEY STAGE 4

Drama GCSE Edexcel Specification

YEAR 10

This year is an experimental year in which the students cover all the aspects of next year’s GCSE examination including both practical workshops (improvisation and script work) and a performance to a chosen audience. The students undertake a range of written tasks to prepare them for the format of the written coursework required in year 11.

Topics covered are;

The Seven Ages of Man or Teenagers (with a performance in October for the Year 6 Open Evenings)

Script work – a Mark Whelan play (Hard to Swallow or Too Much Punch for Judy).

Preparation for a performance, either scripted or improvised, to a chosen audience.

Improvisation skills.

YEAR 11

This year is a very high pressure year with the first practical workshop examination taking place in class time during a four week period in Sept/Oct, the second practical workshop examination taking place in class time during a four week period in Dec/Jan, and a ten week preparation period leading to the practical performance examination for the External Examiner in May.

Coursework for the first workshop must be completed as soon as possible after the workshop is completed and by Christmas at the latest. Coursework for the second workshop must also be completed as soon as possible, and by Easter at the latest.

Topics covered this year are;

War or Refugees.

Blood Brothers.

A topic chosen by the students for their performance examination.

KEY STAGE 5

Drama and Theatre Studies Advanced level Edexcel Specification

YEAR 12 – AS Year

During this year, students must become familiar with significant playwrights, practitioners and events in Theatre History. This is very important for the written examination at the end of the year. They must also begin to develop their performance skills and understand how to apply their knowledge of Theatre History in order to inform their performances.

Topics covered this year are;

The study of two contrasting plays with practical workshop assessment for the examination taking place in class time. Written coursework must also be completed for both of the plays studied.

(The practical assessment by the teacher takes place throughout terms 1 and 2. The written work must be completed by January.)

A play chosen by the teachers for their performance examination which takes place at the end of April/early May.

The study of a play in performance for the written examination in June/July. This play varies from year to year depending on what is available to watch at the time.

YEAR 13 – A2 Year

During this year the students undertake two practical examinations (one devised and one scripted) as well as another end of year written examination.

Topics covered include;

A stimulus chosen by the teachers as a starting point for the devising process – this may be a newspaper article, a play extract, a picture, an object etc.

(This devising unit is assessed by the teacher in class time and must be completed by Christmas. The written coursework component which accompanies it must be completed by January.)

A play chosen by the teachers in consultation with the students for their performance examination which takes place at the end of April/early May.

The study of the play The Trojan Women for the written examination in June/July.

The study of a Shakespeare play in text form and in performance for the written examination in June/July.
