Subject: History
Year 7
At the start of year 7 new pupils are taught the key skills a historian requires to help them study history. These are put to use with a term studying the Romans including a depth study about the life of a Roman soldier and life in the Roman Empire. By the end of the topic pupils will be able to explain what the Romans did for us.
In the spring and summer terms year seven study medieval Britain from 1066 to 1450 and focus particularly on the Norman Conquest. A trip to local castles takes place and pupils complete castles projects as well as work about life in medieval England.
Year 8
Year 8 pupils begin by looking at the Tudor Dynasty and in particular the religious change that happened during that time. As well as this, year 8 look at the social changes for people at this time and complete a project about Tudor life and examine how and why there were so many poor people.
The Stuart dynasty is the focus in the New Year with the Gunpowder plot, the civil war being the focus of study. Further Stuart England topics include the Restoration, Plague and Great Fire of London. Pupils will also examine the end of the Stuarts and the Glorious Revolution.
At the end of the year pupils examine a non European culture, namely the Native Americans and complete a project about their way of life.
Year 9
For the first term, we study developments in Britain between 1750 and 1900, the growth of Britain during the industrial revolution. We examine how the population grew, how people moved into towns and the living conditions there. We examine the change in work and what conditions were like in the new factories.
Year nine then examine the causes of the Great War and focus on what life was like in the trenches, completing a project about trench life.
Democracies and Dictatorships are studied before examining the causes of World War Two and what the major events were in this conflict. Year nine then focus on life on the home front and complete a home front project.
Year 10 First year of GCSE
Paper one- Medicine and Public health through time. (37.5% of final grade)
This topic examines how medicine and the understanding of disease and surgery has developed since the Stone Age. You will examine many different time periods including the Romans, Egyptians and look at how people reacted to events such as the Plague. You will also examine what people believed caused infection and the men and women who helped increase medical knowledge such as Alexander Fleming, Florence Nightingale and William Harvey.
Year 11 Second year of GCSE
Paper two- Enquiry in depth. - Britain 1815-1851 (37.5% of final grade)
You will examine how people in Britain got the Vote, How the poor were dealt with, how Britain’s population changed and why some people went overseas, how bad living conditions were in the towns and how this changed, and finally how Britain developed railways.
