Faculty PSHE

Subject: Citizenship & PSHE

This wide ranging subject area sets out to address the issues and information young people need to enable them to operate safely and happily in the adult world.

Alongside this we hope to help young people understand and accept their responsibilities as citizens within their own community, the UK, and Europe as well as in the global dimension.

Working with Connexions and starting in Year 7 we begin encouraging students to think about ‘the world of work’ and their future careers. In Year 9 work on self awareness and decision making helps them with their option choices for years 10/11 GCSE’s and/or vocational courses. At the end of Year 9 personal profiling through IT career programmes give students an insight into how the skills/qualities/values they identified in their personal self awareness booklets can now help them with identifying suitable jobs and careers in which they would be happy. We also look at the ‘World of Work’ especially the workplace, equality, types of industries, the role of the employer and the employee.

In Year 10 in conjunction with Connexions with connexions and EKBP the task of choosing a work experience placement is tackled, helping students to choose wisely, and then get the best out of their placement. Year 11, again with input from Connexions we guide students through choosing their Post 16 options and applying to the different education or training establishments.

Sex and relationships education is taught throughout the years 7-11, raising young people’s awareness of their rights and responsibilities within all relationships, platonic, professional, loving and sexual. A wide range of issues will be addressed including puberty, STIs, contraception and the law. Practical advice and help is available when we hold our in house sexual health road show at the end of Year 9. In Years 10 and 11 the SRE is revisited to reinforce and remind students, especially in the areas of taking care of yourself and STIs and we will, wherever possible, use specialist external agencies to deliver these important messages. It is hoped to continue this work into Years 12 and 13 addressing the issues which arise for young people once they have turned 16.

Throughout Years 7-11 PSHE raises awareness and informs students of the new experiences, not always good, which will come their way, and equips them with the skills and knowledge to steer a safe path through the temptations and pitfalls ever present for the unwary. Issues surrounding alcohol, tobacco, solvent abuse and recreational drugs are tackled, offering information and advice to assist students in making sensible decisions. The ever present problem of bullying within society today is highlighted with all the students being encouraged to reflect on their own behaviour and attitude to think about the wider issues of racism and homophobia. Under the broad heading of ‘a healthy lifestyle’ students explore such topics as body image, relationships, self esteem, stereotypes and disability.

The citizenship concepts of Rights and Responsibilities, Human Rights, Law and Order, Government and Democracy, Britishness, Multiculturalism, Workers and Consumer Rights, The UK and Europe, Global issues including Environmental Problems are taught throughout the Years 7-11. Active Citizenship is encouraged along with understanding how pressure groups work and how individuals can make a difference.

At the end of Year 11, most students will be entered for the short course examination in Citizenship Studies which draws together all the strands they have studied in the previous 5 years.

A small number of students will study in conjunction with RE additional areas of citizenship and health and welfare and will sit the Humanities GCSE Examination at the end of Year 10

Throughout the five years in-house and external focus days are organized to reinforce the work done in lessons.
