Introduction to the Science Faculty:

Science teaching takes place in nine fully equipped laboratories, two with interactive whiteboards and access to a class set of laptops.

  • Key Stage 3- All students follow a balanced practical and theoretical curriculum with elements of Biology, Chemistry and Physics- leading to SATs examinations in year 8 or 9.
  • Key stage 4- Alternative pathways are provided to allow students to achieve their potential in their preferred learning style. These include the separate sciences- Biology, Chemistry and Physics GCSEs, double GCSEs in Science allowing a choice of subjects in Year 11, a portfolio based vocational OCR National Diploma leading to the equivalent of four GCSEs and Entry Level Certificates which are suited to the work based curriculum.
  • Sixth Form- AS and A level Applied Science is taught.

To make Science relevant to the student’s lives and to stimulate interest a strong emphasis is placed on teaching ‘How Science works’.

Events and Activities:

  • There is a Rocket Club after school every week with a very keen membership.
  • A Year 7 Howlett’s Zoo trip
  • Salter’s Chemistry Challenge
  • Half term and Easter revision courses for A level, GCSE and SATs.
  • After school booster lessons to help with portfolios
