Faculty: ScienceKey Stage 4 At Key Stage 4 there are different pathways available for all students depending on their learning styles and needs. Vocational and academic pathways are offered and students are able to gain qualifications that will best serve their future educational or career needs. There are ten groups in each year at Key Stage 4. Two groups of Year 9 students start their GCSE studies a year early; this allows them to complete ‘Core’ Science GCSE in Year 9 and go on to the separate Sciences in Years 10 and 11. These students will achieve separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics by the end of Year 11. Three groups of Year 10 and 11 students follow the Vocational pathway and study towards the ‘OCR Nationals’ qualification. This is assessed through portfolio work and there is no examination. The qualification is equivalent to four GCSE grades. Students who follow this pathway need to be able to study independently and be prepared to spend a lot of time writing their portfolios. Four groups of Year 10 students study for the ‘Core Science’ GCSE in one year. This allows them an option in Year 11 to study for a different GCSE- subjects that are offered include Biology, Human Physiology and Health, Physics, Astronomy, Additional Science or Applied Science. The GCSEs offered in Year 11 will depend on student numbers. All these students have an opportunity to gain two GCSEs.
