Literacy is the medium of instruction for most subjects.
It is therefore essential that students have the required skills to discuss fluently, to read a wide variety of texts, to write effectively and with correct grammar on a range of topics, using the appropriate style for the task in hand.
It is our aim to ensure our students become fluent and perceptive readers who write intelligently and with creativity, as these Literacy skills are needed across the curriculum not just in English lessons. The whole school termly literacy focus is implemented in every lesson to embed our vision.
In order to achieve this we implement a daily Literacy opportunity in tutor times where strong emphasis is placed on reading, writing and the acquisition of speaking and listening skills. In addition, DEAR time takes place at the beginning of period 4 every school day. Daily paired reading is also provided by trained reading tutors for selected students.
