Travelling to School

School Travel Plan:

The school successfully completed a School Travel Plan which aimed to encourage pupils and staff to use sustainable travel methods to and from school. Wherever possible we would ask parents/carers not to bring pupils to school by car but to use alternative means, e.g. public transport, bicycles or walking. If you do have to use the car please do not bring them right up to the school gate, but consider dropping off further away and letting your children walk part of the way. There is a Toucan Crossing immediately outside school that, if used, will ensure students can cross Westwood Road safely.

We have a bicycle shelter that is completely water proof where pupils can store their bikes.  They will need to have their own bike lock.

Transport Arrangements to Broadstairs:

There are special St. George's buses morning and afternoon. Details are obtainable from the relevant bus company.  All pupils travelling by bus must line up in the playground at the end of the day and will be dismissed by a member of staff as and when their bus arrives.

Behaviour on Buses:

Pupils are expected to:

  • Be considerate and courteous to other students, members of the public and transport staff.
  • Act in a responsible manner while waiting for the bus and when getting on and off the bus.
  • Catch the first appropriate bus with available space to prevent over crowding on certain buses.

It should be noted that:

  • The Bus Company will not carry students whose behaviour is threatening the safety of others.
  • The School liaises very closely with the Bus Companies to ensure that any unacceptable behaviour is dealt with.

THE SCHOOL FULLY SUPPORTS ANY ACTION TAKEN BY THE BUS COMPANIES IN REGARD TO POOR BEHAVIOUR.

Cyclists:

If your son/daughter is a competent cyclist with good road sense then we would encourage you to consider allowing them to cycle to school. Cycling reduces congestion and pollution and is a healthy activity in itself.

Students wishing to cycle to school may do so, but it must be remembered that:

The School urges parents/carers to encourage their son/daughter to wear safety helmets when travelling to and from School and strongly recommend that students take a cycling proficiency test. Students should dismount on the school campus. It is the responsibility of parents/carers to ensure bicycles are roadworthy.

THE GOVERNORS WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR BICYCLES WHICH ARE BROUGHT TO THE SCHOOL. PARENTS/CARERS ARE REMINDED THAT ALTHOUGH THE BICYCLE SHEDS ARE SECURE THEY ARE ACCESSIBLE FROM THE MAIN ROAD AND NO VALUABLE ATTACHMENTS SHOULD BE LEFT ON THE BICYCLES. BICYCLES SHOULD BE PADLOCKED.

Motor Cycles and Scooters:

A copy of the insurance certificate, provisional driving license and vehicle details will be required.

WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE PERMISSION FOR BICYCLES, MOTOR CYCLES OR SCOOTERS TO BE BROUGHT ONTO THE SCHOOL CAMPUS.  ELECTRIC SCOOTERS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON OUR SCHOOL SITE.
