THINKING ABOUT APPRENTICESHIPS?
As tuition fees rise, and more young people find themselves looking for alternatives to university, many are turning to apprenticeships to get their careers off the ground. But are they a viable alternative?
The Myth: Apprenticeships are for students that didn’t get the grades for university.
The Reality: Apprenticeships are valuable, hands-on qualifications that allow young people to earn while they learn in a whole range of industries. Higher Apprenticeships even carry the same weight as a Foundation degree which can be converted into a full Honours degree.
There are three tiers of apprenticeship:
· Intermediate – equivalent to 5 GCSE passes
· Advanced – equivalent to 2 A level passes
· Higher – lead to NVQ Level 4 and above and increasingly to a full degree paid for by the employer
All apprenticeships are required to be at least 12 months long.
The National Apprenticeship Service advertises upcoming vacancies from the country’s biggest and best apprenticeship employers. It was launched by Anne Milton, Skills Minister, at the House of Commons on 26th June 2018 and is shown below :

A new scheme is giving young people the chance to train within law without studying for a legal degree!
The Level 4 Apprenticeship in Legal Services from the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) is equivalent to the first year of a university degree course. It makes the route to becoming a paralegal much easier.
There is also an option to become a Charted Legal Executive Lawyer (similar to a Solicitor) but you specialise in one area of the law.
The scheme has 750 places this year and hopes to encourage people from all walks of life to enter the legal profession.
While there are no set entry requirements, firms are likely to impose on minimum requirements such as good GCSEs in Maths and English.
Firms get full funding for apprenticeships aged 16-18, while half the cost is paid for those aged 19-24. Traineeships are being run in personal injury, insolvency commercial litigation and debt recovery.
There are 100 places for school leavers to help shape the Government policy. Various role in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, Education, Cabinet office, Crown Prosecution Service, H M Revenue & Customs, Work & Pensions and the Ministry Of Justice. Salaries will depend of the department and location but the minimum is £18,763.
All trainees will work towards a Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship in Business Administration.
Applicants must have 5 GCSEs at grade A-C including Maths and English Language. They must be aged between 18-21 on August 13 and be able to start September 2013.
