Private Candidates

Private Candidates

We are pleased to accept applications from Private Candidates wishing to sit examinations with St George’s Church of England Foundation School.

We understand that sitting examinations as a private candidate can feel daunting, so our aim is to make the process as clear and straightforward as possible. However, there are a number of factors we need to consider before we can accept a private candidate entry.

Before you apply

We can only accept private candidates for qualifications and examination boards that we already offer at St George’s.

If we do not offer the qualification you wish to sit, or we offer the qualification but through a different examination board, unfortunately we will not be able to accept your application.

Where we do offer the qualification and examination board you require, acceptance of your application will then be subject to availability and space within our examination timetable and facilities.

We have a limited amount of capacity for private candidates, and priority must be given to our own students. We therefore cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate every request, even where we offer the requested qualification and examination board.

When will I know if there is space?

We usually have a clearer indication of our capacity for private candidates around November/December, once we have completed the seating arrangements for our internal mock examinations and can assess the examination space available to us.

Submitting an application does not guarantee an examination place. We will review your request and contact you to confirm whether we are able to accommodate your entry.

Examination Fees

Private Candidate fees are charged at:

Awarding Body Entry Fee + £5.00 School Administration Fee

There is a significant amount of administration involved in processing and managing a private candidate examination entry. This includes entering candidates with the awarding body, checking and managing examination requirements, producing examination documentation, organising seating and invigilation, managing examination materials and ensuring that all awarding body regulations and procedures are followed. The £5.00 administration fee contributes towards this additional administrative work.

Please be aware of changing entry fees

Awarding body entry fees increase as the examination year progresses. The initial entry fee is followed by Late Entry and, where applicable, High Late Entry fees.

These deadlines and additional charges are set by the individual awarding bodies, not by the school. Once an awarding body's deadline has passed, we are required to pay the applicable increased fee if an entry is still to be made.

For this reason, we strongly recommend that private candidates familiarise themselves with the relevant entry fee and deadlines before submitting an application.

Current awarding body entry fees are linked below.

Please ensure that you are able to pay the applicable entry fee plus the £5.00 administration fee by 10th January. This allows us sufficient time to process and confirm entries before the relevant awarding body Late Entry deadline.

Please note that an examination entry is not confirmed until payment has been received and the school has confirmed acceptance of the entry. If payment is not received by the required deadline, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to process the entry before additional awarding body charges apply.

Ready to apply?

If you have checked the qualifications and examination boards we offer and wish to request a private candidate entry, please complete our Private Candidate Request Form.

We will review your request and contact you once we have determined whether we are able to accommodate your examination entry.
