Hot Weather Update

As you'll be aware, we're expecting high temperatures again next week. We want to reassure you that we've put a number of measures in place to keep all our pupils safe, cool and comfortable during the heat.

Adjustments We're Making at School
To help everyone cope with the heat, we're making the following changes:

Uniform
We would encourage pupils to:

  • wear school shorts or school skirts
  • wear short sleeve shirts

Pupils do NOT need to wear blazers, jumpers or cardigans; footwear should remain as per school uniform for safety reasons and we will monitor the wearing of ties on a day by day basis.

Timetable and activity adjustments

  • PE lessons will move indoors if necessary and less strenuous activities will be delivered
  • We'll be using shaded areas of the school grounds wherever possible
  • Pupils will be encouraged to drink more frequently
  • We're keeping classrooms as cool as possible by closing blinds, using fans, and ensuring good ventilation

Additional measures

  • Pupils can refill water bottles throughout the day
  • Staff are monitoring pupils closely for any signs of heat-related discomfort
  • We're encouraging pupils to stay in shaded areas during break and lunch times

What Your Child Should Bring to School
To help your child stay comfortable during the hot weather, please ensure they bring:

Essential items:

  • A large water bottle – this can be refilled throughout the day
  • A sun hat or cap – to wear during outdoor activities and breaks
  • Sun cream (SPF 30 or higher) – applied before school, with a bottle to reapply during the day (please ensure your child knows how to apply this themselves)

Optional but recommended:

  • Sunglasses for break and lunch times
  • A small handheld fan (battery-operated only, please)

Important reminders:

  • Please apply sun cream to your child before they leave for school
  • Make sure water bottles are clearly labelled with your child's name
  • If your child has any medical conditions that may be affected by heat (such as asthma), please contact us so we can provide additional support

Signs to Watch For
We take our duty to ensure the health, safety and welfare of pupils and staff very seriously, particularly during extreme weather. Please remind your child to tell a member of staff immediately if they feel unwell, dizzy, have a headache, or feel unusually tired.

If your child is unwell or you have concerns about them attending school during the hot weather, please contact the school office to discuss this.

Looking Ahead
We're monitoring weather forecasts closely and will continue to adapt our arrangements as needed. If temperatures remain high, these measures will stay in place, and we'll keep you updated with any further adaptations should the need arise or the advice from the DfE change.

Thank you for your support in helping us keep all our pupils safe and comfortable during this period of hot weather.
