Year 10 Work Experience

Next Monday is Year 10 Work Experience.

Pupils will their final Work Experience assembly last week and will be given a copy of the Diary that they are required to complete during the week. A copy of the dairy can be found here:

In the end, almost 110 pupils have organised their own placements.

Pupils have been asked to ensure that they have contacted their work placement prior to the week. There are usually some individual instructions that need to be followed. If pupils cannot get through by phone then usually we can get an email address as an alternative.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. What should we do to be prepared for the Work Experience week?

A. Your child will have been given a sheet with the Work Experience details on it.  This includes which days (in some cases this is not every day) and the hours. It also includes details about what clothing is required, lunch break and contact details for the person running the work experience.  Each pupil has been told to contact this person to introduce themselves, indeed some of our year 10 have already popped along to where they will be in order to get themselves ready, and practice getting there! Some placements require a pupil to have filled in a form prior to next week – please check their sheet.

Q. What happens if my child didn’t get a form?

A. Experience suggests that the child has lost the form in most cases (the Year Team will have a spare copy).  However, we still have 2 pupils that we are still trying to place, and there are a number of self-arranged placements organised by parents, without the EBP.

Q. What if my child is ill?

A. Please contact the person at your placement to inform them. Please also contact the school so that we are also aware, as you would on a normal school day, or email careers@st-georgescofe-thanet.kent.sch.uk   Our staff try to contact or visit all pupils during the week and we would not want to turn up and find the pupil is not there.

Q. My child does not like their placement. Can they change?

A. The organising of more than 220 pupils was carried out by the EBP and they have to check Health and Safety, Insurance liabilities etc. This is why the first letter sent to you was in August 2024.  If a work placement is not working for your child we would ask them to keep trying – it is an experience that only lasts up to 5 days. If there is no way that they will return, we would encourage parents to find an alternative through their own contacts that they have and to let us know where this is, if possible. We will not be able to organise an alternative.

Q. My child has had a great week, can they do another?

A.  We frequently allow pupils to stay on for a second week, but we ask that this request comes from the Employer, not from the child. They can email careers@st-georgescofe-thanet.kent.sch.uk and where possible, a second week can be organised.   Occasionally, a pupil may be required to be in school to complete work.

We hope that all pupils gain from their work experience and that this help them identify their skills as they begin the process of applying for Sixth Forms, Colleges and Apprenticeships in year 11.
