Subject Vision

St George's is a caring and inclusive school that enables every individual to flourish spiritually, morally and academically for the rest of their lives.  We aim to be a lighthouse for our local community by being a beacon of God’s love.  We provide a progressive curriculum that is adventurous and challenging, leading to resilience, curiosity and independence.  We aim to inspire all within our community to develop their God given potential for the benefit of others.

"For the body does not consist of one member but of many"

1 Corinthians 12:14

SCIENCE CURRICULUM VISION

Challenge:

Pupils are pushed to maximise their own individual potential in science. The subject curriculum offers many opportunities for pupils to engage with complex theories and abstract ideas that will stretch their knowledge and deepen their understanding beyond the limits of what they once believed they were once capable. Pupils will learn the skills that will help them cope with future challenges they may face in the real world after their school life.

Resilience:

In science, pupils are taught logical approaches to deal with challenging and varied problems. Through experiences with these types of contexts and working through their reasoning, pupils will build upon their confidence, becoming resilient learners and workers.

Community:

There are ample opportunities for pupils to make connections and build friendships with their peers in science when they participate in paired and grouped practical experiments and investigations. Team work and communication are some of the most important skills pupils will learn and these are also essential skills to prepare pupils for the working world when they leave school.

Adventure:

Science is an incredibly exciting subject! From learning about how the body works, to astronomy and outer space, to explosions and other chemical reactions. Science is certain to instil in pupils, excitement, passion and enthusiasm about the world around them!

Independent:

The world of science has limitless potential of discoveries to be made in the future. Within the science curriculum, pupils are faced with unusual contexts and questions and they are challenged to put forward their individual ideas in order to solve the problem or devise an experiment to test a hypothesis.

Curiosity:

In science we aim to help pupils develop a sense of awe and wonder about the world around them, ensuring their curiosity prepares them for jobs that don’t even exist yet!

Our Learning Journeys

In year 7 classes rotate in no specific order, through Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The students are taught by specialist teachers for each subject.

In year 8 the classes rotate through Biology, Chemistry and Physics. However students will finish the year on the subject they will study for their first GCSE in year 9. The students are taught by specialist teachers for each subject.

Revision

GENERAL INFORMATION (USEFUL INFORMATION FOR PARENTS)

Although students in years 7 and 8 learn all three science subjects on rotation, In Year 9, 10 and 11 students will be studying 1 GCSE subject per year in no specific order. For example: Biology in year 9, Chemistry in year 10 and Physics in year 11.

At the end of each year the GCSE exams will be sat and consist of 2 papers, each 1 hour 45 minutes in length.

Students will therefore need to be able to revise as their first GSCE exams will be in year 9. You can find everything you need to help students revise for their Year 7 and 8 science tests below giving them skills and knowledge for success at GCSE.
